Una batería totalmente cargada y en buenas condiciones mostrará una lectura de y . Cada celda debe mostrar una diferencia mayor de puntos con relación a las otras celdas. Cualquier diferencia mayor de indica que las celdas pueden estar sulfatadas y que la batería se debe cambiar y no volver a cargar. Si todas las celdas muestran una lectura que es igual, pero muy por debajo de la marca de , será necesario volver a cargar la batería y volverla a comprobar hasta que la prueba con el hidrómetro dé una lectura de .  Los hidrómetros de costo menor tienen cinco diferentes bolas dentro de un tubo de vidrio. Cada bola tiene un color y un peso diferentes. Al aumentar la concentración del ácido, flotarán más bolas hasta que todas ellas queden flotando. Esto indica que la batería está totalmente cargada. Para comprobar la batería, extraiga líquido de cada celda y anote el número de bolas que están flotando. Vuelva a colocar el líquido en la celda correspondiente y compruebe la siguiente celda. En cada celda debe flotar el mismo número de bolas. Si no ocurre esto, es posible que la celda con el número menor de bolas flotando esté defectuosa o sulfatada. Si todas las celdas muestran una lectura baja (flotan sólo unas cuantas bolas), entonces habrá que cargar la batería de nuevo. Se puede emplear un cargador lento y la carga debe continuar hasta que todas las bolas en el hidrómetro floten (o hasta que la lectura sea por lo menos de ).  Algunas baterías exentas de mantenimiento tienen un hidrómetro integrante. En muchos de estos modelos, encontrará una ventanilla en la parte superior de la batería.  Generalmente, un "ojo" obscuro o negro significa que la batería debe cargarse de nuevo. Un ojo verde indica que la batería tiene una carga mínima de 75 por ciento. Un indicador transparente o amarillo significa que la batería está defectuosa y que se debe cambiar por una nueva unidad.  Prueba de peso especifico  Medir el peso específico de cada celda usando el hidrómetro diseñado para probar la batería. Insertar un poco de electrolito en el instrumento y mirar el flotador interno. Una escala indica el estado relativo de carga de la batería midiendo la altura a la que esta el flotador en relación con el nivel de fluido. Una lectura total muy baja de o menos indica un estado de carga bajo. Una lectura total alta de alrededor de indica un alto estado de carga. La lectura de cada celda debería ser la misma.
