However, it offers an amazing amount of features in addition to the TS format, therefore supplying much more sonic diversity than its forerunner. The heart of this pedal lies in the 3-position toggle switch that selects the style of clipping: A-Asymmetrical; L-LED; S-Symmetrical. In the initial trial I found myself gravitating toward the LED setting, as this offered more crunch with an open, natural sounding drive (amp-like). However, inside the unit there is a trim-pot for controlling the level of compression on the A & S modes. I've yet to adjust this pot, but I feel it may be necessary as there is an inordinate drop in volume in the A & S modes when compared to the LED. A further trim-pot adjusts the treble cutoff frequency for the tone control and there is yet another to control the brightness of the LED indicator. On the face of the unit there are 'Filter' and 'Fat' mini pots. Using a Strat into a DRRI, I found no need to adjust the filter ('post-gain treble response') and when I tried, it merely served to 'blanket' the sound. I can see where this may be useful with a brighter rig such as an AC15 perhaps, but it wasn't required in the test setup. The 'Fat' control affects the 'pre-gain & bass response' and I set this to approximately 9:00 in order to tame the edginess of the sound. I did experience some background hiss when using this unit at higher gain settings, but no more than expected in this situation. I've heard worse from more expensive and more acclaimed pedals than the VFE.

The long sample time translates into added features in many of the programs. In the FREEZE programs (the digital sampling programs), you have a maximum recording time of 5.8 seconds. Three types of FREEZE programs are available, and all three programs allow recording and overdubbing with variable playback pitch. Sample start and end points can be set for editing purposes. This function also makes it possible to set a start point at the end of the sample and the end point at the start of the sample and get the sample to play backwards. FREEZE 2 adds the ability to set a loop point in your sample for looped playback. FREEZE 3 is a stereo sampling program. Sample time is cut in half (2.9 seconds) to accommodate simultaneous sampling of both left and right channels. The extended sample time also affects the DELAY L,C,R program. This delay is a little different from most in that it includes a third channel, the center channel. Delay time for each channel is adjustable from.1 milliseconds to 5.2 seconds. There are two feedback delay parameters for this program, each adjustable up to 5.2 seconds. Each feedback delay has a gain control to set the amount of repeats to follow the initial repeat. All these parameters make for an exceptional delay program with numerous possibilities for special effects. The STEREO ECHO program also takes advantage of the extended sample time and offers left and right channel feedback delays of up to 2.6 seconds along with an initial delay for each channel of up to 2.6 seconds. The reverb programs include HALL, ROOM, VOCAL, PLATE, ECHO ROOM, GATE REVERB, REVERSE GATE, and 3 EARLY REFLECTION programs. There is more than enough diversity in these reverb programs to handle any reverb need. Reverb time can be adjusted as high at 480 seconds. That's 480 seconds, not milliseconds! Various other parameters give you ample control over reverb characteristics. All bases are covered in the reverb section. Modulation programs include your basic STEREO FLANGE, CHORUS, STEREO PHASING, TREMOLO, and SYMPHONIC. The COOLTRON Snake Charmer Compressor pedal uses a 12AU7 preamp-type tube at low voltage to deliver the kind of tone that, until now, would have been impossible to achieve in a battery-powered pedal. Tame your tone with the Snake Charmer Compressor. The result? Silky smooth, mesmerizing tone that behaves as it should. The Snake Charmer's compression affects the ratio and threshold of the signal, smoothing out peaks and spikes. At the same time, the Snake Charmer also increases the Gain level to complement the corresponding ratio and threshold settings so that the overall gain remains constant. There's also a Gain Reduction Indicator that gives you visual cues of the results of your settings. And a High/Low Switch lets you choose between two overall levels of ratio. The Snake Charmer effect pedal is equipped with other controls for Attack, which determines how quickly the gain reduction kicks in, and Release, which determines how long the gain is attenuated. Finally, the High-End Emphasis control fine-tunes the amount of compression applied to the top end of the guitar signal. Want to know how it all works? Normally, tubes are used at high voltages and this restricts their use in battery-powered devices such as guitar effects pedals. Historically, attempts have been made to use tubes at low voltages in what has been dubbed "starvation" mode, but these circuits don't allow the tube to function in an acceptable manner. The tube simply cannot be biased to a satisfactory operating condition. Plus, the necessary heater (filament) current is too high to deliver acceptable battery life. Imagine how annoying it would be to have to change batteries every ten minutes during a gig! Here's what makes the Vox COOLTRON system tick. The COOLTRON circuit basically operates by using two very special signal paths. The first is the servo circuit, which provides the right conditions between the plate of the tube and the grid. This achieves controllable, stable parameters for the tube and provides the correct operating conditions for the tube to function as it would if run at a higher voltage. The second circuit is a patented power supply that provides a low voltage, low current supply to the heater elements in the tube. Since the tube is now running at such a reduced supply level, the anode current is much smaller than normal. We have chosen names for the distortions that will be suggestive of the sounds you will get with all the controls in the central part of their range. We are not trying to imply exact simulations of the various analog effects. Rather than attempt a mathematical modeling or emulation of classic sounds (which, incidentally, we think is really not possible with distortion), we offer a different take based upon ear and overall circuit function evaluations. There are 11 distortion algorithms and one CLEAN BOOST / TONE mode that are selectable with the main effect knob. The TONE control is specially tuned for each setting to give a preferred response. The frequency range used for the TONE control varies between settings. The CLEAN BOOST / TONE mode allows you to use the Classic Distortion to provide a volume boost to the signal with out distortion. However, if the signal is boosted too much it will begin to clip. If the DRIVE knob is turned up there will be a raspy sound as the signal peaks are hard clipped. In general, this doesn’t sound very good. However, if the DRIVE is cranked, the resultant distortion is not bad at all, despite consisting only of digital hard clipping. Don’t believe us? Give it a try. This distortion can be improved by rolling off the TONE control to reduce the high frequencies.
